Standard Operating Procedure

Title:Pesticide Application

Dept: Agronomy

Lab: Agronomy G313, B411, B413

Supervisor: Randy Shoemaker

1. Do not perform this procedure unless you are licensed with the state of Iowa as a pesticide
applicator. You must also be certified with ISU as a respirator user and have taken and passed the
test for this.

2. Know the location of the MSDS sheets. Read and familiarize yourself with the requirements for
safe use and disposal of pesticides.

3. Always wear protective clothing when performing this procedure. A tyvek suit, respirator, safety
goggles, nytrile gloves, and rubber safety boots must be worn to avoid contamination of skin, eyes
and lungs.

4. In case of pesticides that have the skull and crossbones symbol on them, another certified
applicator must be present and wearing the appropriate apparel. This applicator must observe the
other one at all times, and must be able to help if the person applying the pesticides is overcome.

5. Always remember to post re-entry times on the blackboard and to fill out and sign the spraying log
sheet.

6. If there are any questions, Rich McCaully at Environmental Health and Safety or Wendy Wintersteen
at ISU Extension, are there to help.

7. Whenever you have a question or concern regarding health or safety with respect to a specific
procedure, consult the laboratory supervisor or the principal investigator before proceeding.
