Abstract:In investigations on soy bean in the field in Madhya Pradesh, India, in 1971-74, infestation by Ophiomyia phaseoli (Tryon) (Melanagromyza phaseoli) tended to reduce the yield of pods and grains, but no relation was found between the extent of damage to the stems and the loss. It is calculated from investigations in treated and untreated fields that even when insecticides are used, a net loss of 1.1 g/plant (233 kg/ha) is inevitable, and it is suggested that the only satisfactory control measure is to develop resistant plants ADDITIONAL ABSTRACT:In studies in 1971-4, soyabean plants infested with M. phaseoli had 17.08-17.82 pods and seed yields of 4.33-5.49 g/plant compared with 19.43-21.78 pods and 5.93-6.94 g in healthy plants. On the basis of a net loss of 1.1 g seed plant in 53% of infested plants in an opt. plant population of 400 000/ha, yield losses due to M. phaseoli were estimated at 0.23 t/ha.
