Abstract:Released in 1994 and derived from the cross J80-293 × N81-1756, Carver (PI584506) is a maturity group VII soyabean cultivar averaging ~2 days earlier than Stonewall and adapted to latitudes of 30-35°N. It was tested in the Uniform Soybean Tests, Southern States, during 1990-93 and in Alabama State Variety Tests during 1989-93. Compared with Stonewall, Carver produced seeds which averaged 19 mg per seed lower in seed weight and contained 10 g/kg more oil and 6 g/kg more protein. Carver is resistant to Heterodera glycines races 3 and 14, Meloidogyne incognita, M. arenaria and Cercospora sojina, and moderately susceptible to Diaporthe phaseolorum f.sp. meridionalis. Carver yielded 3% less than Stonewall in the Uniform Soybean Tests and 7% more in the Alabama State Variety Tests. In a nematode-infested farmer's field in Baldwin County, Alabama, Carver yielded 172% more than Stonewall and 62% more than Leflore, a nematode-resistant standard.
