Abstract:A root rot disease occurring in this crop in Bibai and Memuro during 1978 was characterised by reddish brown lesions at the roots and stem bases, which turned violet brown with age. The tops became stunted, yellowish and defoliated. The causal fungus was identified as C. cassiicola. The opt. temp. for growth on PDA was 20-25 deg C, while the opt. soil temp. for disease development was 15-20 deg . Disease was favoured by moist soil conditions. The pathogen survived at least 1 yr in soil and was pathogenic to various other Leguminosae and to sugar beet in inoculation tests.
