Abstract:In Argentina, stem canker of soyabeans was first observed in 1993 during a disease survey of southern Santa Fe province. Disease incidence ranged from 5-8% in isolated fields but, by 1997, had increased to 70-100%. The symptoms and morphological characteristics of the causal agent, D. phaseolorum f.sp. meridionalis, are described and pathogenicity was confirmed by inoculating both resistant and susceptible soyabean cultivars. When cultured on water agar, alpha conidia from pycnidia and ascospores from the perithecia were obtained.
