Abstract:	The disease, which has recently become prevalent in the USA, is reviewed in relation to its history, the taxonomy of the pathogen (Diaporthe phaseolorum var. caulivora), epidemiology, control (by chemical and cultural means) and breeding for resistance. It is concluded that the aggressive strs. occurring in the southern USA are different from their northern counterparts.
