Abstract:Three plant introductions (PI 171451, PI 227687 and PI 229358) of soy bean with resistance to Epilachna varivestis Muls. were evaluated in the laboratory against 5 commercial cultivars for leaf-feeding resistance (antibiosis) to larvae of Heliothis zea (Boddie) and H. virescens (F.). On the basis of larval mortality, larval and pupal weights, and duration of the larval stage, all 3 introductions were resistant to both species. On the basis of larval mortality, PI 171451 and PI 229358 were more resistant to H. zea than to H. virescens; PI 227687 was equally resistant to both species. None of the larvae survived on PI 227687, which suggests that this introduction may have a different genetic basis for resistance from that of the other 2 introductions.
