Title:Virus infectivity of alfalfa mosaic virus in soybean as influenced by nodulation

Abstract:The infectivity of alfalfa mosaic virus (AMV) in the soybean was positively correlated with the amount of nodulation. Production of root nodules increased in both AMV-infected and healthy plants in response to increased rhizobial population in the soil. AMV-infected soybean plants produced fewer root nodules than healthy plants at a given rhizobial population. When a virus infectivity experiment was conducted, leaves from plants with better nodulation had higher AMV infectivity than the leaves of the same age which were from plants with less nodulation. Increased N fixation due to increased nodulation may contribute to the increased virus infectivity. The increased rhizobial population in the soil could prolong the longevity of the older leaves.
