Abstract:The soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] cultivar ‘Davis’, P.I. 229358, and F1 and F2 generations from the cross Davis ? P-I- 229358 were grown in a greenhouse and rated visually for leaf-feeding damage by soybean looper [Pseudoflusia includens (Walker)]. Parents and 365 F3 lines were then rated for leaf-feeding damage by soybean looper in a field cage. The rating on F2 plants in the greenhouse was significantly correlated (r = 0.52) to the rating of their F3 lines in the field cage. The average rating of F3 lines changed 0.6 unit for each unit change in the rating of F2 plants (b = 0.61). Data from parents and F2 plants suggested no dominance for resistance to feeding by soybean looper. The F2 distribution was skewed in the direction of the susceptible parent. The study indicated that large numbers of F2 plants segregating for reaction to leaf-feeding by soybean looper may be effectively evaluated in the greenhouse.
