Abstract:Greenhouse investigations were conducted to study the effect of girdling by S. festinus (Say), on translocation and nitrogen fixation in soybeans, G. max (L.) Merrill. Radiotracer studies with 14C glucose demonstrated that girdling of petioles effectively blocked the movement of assimilates in the phloem. Nodule number, nodule dry weight, root dry weight, leaf area and nitrogen fixation activity were all significantly reduced by S. festinus feeding injury.
