Abstract:Derived as a bulked increase of an F4 plant from the cross G80-1515 × Vance, Pearl (PI583367) was released in 1994 as a special-purpose soyabean cultivar for the production of the Japanese fermented product natto. It matures 3 days later than Young and is adapted to similar latitudes (~31-37°N). In 4 North Carolina environments, the 100-seed weight of Pearl averaged 8.4 g, lower than that of Young (16.7 g) or Vance (9.1 g). Pearl averaged 15 cm shorter in plant height than Young. The average seed protein and oil concentrations for Pearl on a dry weight basis are 417 and 186 g/kg seed. Pearl is resistant to the southern root knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita), and moderately resistant to M. arenaria and M. javanica.
