Title:Cercospora kikuchii and other pigmented Cercospora species: cultural and reproductive characteristics and pathogenicity to soybean.

Abstract:Ten C. spp. from hosts other than soyabean produced a purple pigment in culture and on inoculated soyabean seeds indistinguishable from that produced by C. kikuchii. All produced conidia on a medium made from senescent pod extracts and on V-8 juice agar after incubation under continuous light for 2-3 days at 28 deg C. Eight spp. were similar to C. kikuchii in their cultural characteristics and caused cotyledonary lesions on seedlings indistinguishable from those caused by C. kikuchii. Results suggest that several crop and weed spp. may serve as alternate hosts and as sources of inoculum in the soyabean disease cycle.
