Abstract:Purple stained seeds of the soyabean cultivar Akishirome were sown in the field and disease progress examined by microscopic observation of lesions formed on tissues every 2-7 days from the cotyledon stage to harvest. The first visible symptoms appeared on the cotyledons 10-15 days after sowing and infection spread to young stems, unifoliate leaves, trifoliate leaves, stems, branches, petioles, pods and seeds. Newly developed tissues were continuously infected by conidia produced on already infected tissues, so that lesions were detected throughout the growing period. Seed infection and the appearance of purple stained seeds were first noticed c. 30 and 40 days after the full bloom stage, respectively. At these times, seeds had already developed 10 and 40% of the weight of the mature stage. Purple stained seeds were not recognized in harvested seeds until 65-70 days after full bloom. The pathogen survived in the diseased plant debris left in the fields but the burial of debris prevented this survival.
