Abstract:Geranium dissectum is the main early season wild host of both the bollworm Heliothis zea [Helicoverpa zea] and the tobacco budworm H. virescens in the Mississippi Delta area. Early to mid-April application of 1.12 kg 2,4-D/ha kept larval populations below a detectable level for about 1 week after treatment. Low levels of infestation then built up but declined sharply to zero with the destruction of the host 4 weeks after treatment. Similar control was obtained by mowing G. dissectum or applying an insect growth regulator in early to mid-May.
