Abstract:The soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merrill, insect-resistant breeding line GatIR 81-296 was tested for resistance against three polyphagous species of Spodroptera, the fall armyworm (FAW), S. frugiperda (J. E. Smith), the yellowstriped armyworm (YSAW), S. ornithogalli Guenee, and the southern armyworm (SAW), S. eridania (Cramer). In no-choice laboratory foliage-feeding bioassays, mortality of FAW and YSAW was significantly greater when larvae were reared on foliage from the cultivar 'GaSoy 17'. Larval development time was significantly increased and larval weight at 14 days was significantly reduced for all three species when fed foliage of GatIR 81-296. Pupal weights were also significantly lower when YSAW and SAW were reared on GatIR 81-296 foliage. In dual-choice laboratory bioassays using leaflet discs, larvae of all three species preferred discs from the susceptible soybean, 'GaSoy 17'. Resistance of GatIR 81-296 to Spodoptera sp. appears to be due to larval nonpreference or a combination of larval non-preference and antibiosis.
