Title:Threecornered alfalfa hopper's late-season damage to soybeans.

Abstract:The damage caused by the membracid Spissistilus festinus to soyabeans was studied in the field in Louisiana. Different early- and late-season population levels resulted in different levels of main stem girdling (early-season damage), petiole girdling (late-season damage) and yields. Yields were highest in plots which were treated with 0.1 lb a.i. fenvalerate/acre during and after bloom. Fenvalerate was applied to eliminate populations at the end of the first generation and when 2nd generation nymphs began moulting to adults. Populations exceeded threshold densities of 1 adult/sweep after both treatments and the average total yield reduction was 5 bushels/acre. It is concluded that management decisions should be based on the nymph population density to allow proper timing of control strategies and insecticidal treatment is recommended when the nymph population exceeds 3/foot of row (ground cloth sampling) or 12/beat net sample, at or after pod set.
