Abstract:Pods of a susceptible (Amsoy 71) and a resistant (P.I.80837) soybean line were inoculated with Phomopsis longicolla, and pod and seed infection was determined 1, 4 and 7 wk after inoculation. Pods of both lines were equally colonized. Wounds were not required for establishment of the fungus in pods. Inoculation of nonwounded pods resulted in 64% seed infection in the susceptible line and only 3.3% in the resistant one. However, inoculation of wounded pods resulted in 88% seed infection in the susceptible line and 82% in the resistant line. Microscopic examination of seeds colonized by P. longicolla indicated that the fungus invaded through the funiculus and hilum or directly through the seed coat.
