Abstract:A laboratory study quantified the relationship between daily soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merrill, leaf area consumption and temperature and soybean looper, Pseudoplusia includens (Walker), larval instar or weight. Seven weight and instar classes and four constant temperatures (15.6, 21.1, 26.7, and 32.2 degrees C) were employed in the study. Consumption by fourth to sixth instars constituted approximately 96% of the total leaf area consumed. Fourth to sixth instars fed greenhouse-grown leaves consumed 79.9% more leaf area than those fed field-grown leaves of the same variety. However, field-grown leaves were smaller and thicker than greenhouse-grown leaves. The mean daily leaf area consumption rate increased exponentially with instar and linearly with temperature and initial larval weight. Mean consumption rate was 7-9 times more sensitive to a change in instar or larval weight than to temperature.
