Abstract:Numbers of larval instars, weight gain, relative growth rate, relative consumption rate, and efficiency of conversion of ingested and digested food were measured for the noctuid Anticarsia gemmatalis feeding on 6 legume species (hairy indigo (Indigofera hirsuta), lespedeza (Lespedeza stipulacea), sesbania (Sesbania exaltata), white sweetclover (Melilotis alba), cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) and soyabean). Sesbania was the most suitable host, and lespedeza the least suitable. Supernumerary instars were observed for larvae fed on cowpea and lespedeza. Two other legumes, Crotalaria spectabilis and Cassia obtusifolia, did not support complete larval development.
