Title:A new legume strain of tobacco mosaic virus from soybean in Yugoslavia

Abstract:A str. of TMV affecting soyabeans caused symptoms of veinclearing and mild chlorotic mosaic. On the basis of host range, symptomatology, light and electron microscopy, properties in vitro and serological tests, the isolate was identified as a new str. of TMV and designated as soyabean str. (TMV-S). It differed from common (TMV-C) and bean (TMV-B) strs in host range and symptoms. In addition to soyabean, other legumes infected included the pea cultivar Little Marvel and Trifolium pratense var. Kenland. The bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) cultivars Pinto, Tendercrop, Topcrop and Bountiful, and the Rutgers tomato were not infected. Lesions distinct from those of TMV-C were induced on Chenopodium, Datura and Nicotiana. In serological tests TMV-S was closely related to TMV-C but distantly related to TMV-B. Virus purified from tobacco plants sedimented as 4-5 components of different lengths.
