Abstract: | Eight plant species from the Fabaceae family - Crotalaria striata, C. paulina, C. spectabilis, C. juncea, Cajanus cajan (pigeon pea), Canavalia ensiformis (horse bean), Canavalia gladiata and Mucuna aterrima (black velvetbean) - were inoculated with P. phaseoli f.sp. meridionalis (Ppm) to evaluate their susceptibility. The plants were inoculated using the toothpick method and maintained in a humid chamber for 48 h after the inoculation. Soybean cultivar UFV-10 was used as a control. The pathogen caused the death of soybean plants 30 days after the inoculation. No symptoms or signs were observed on the other species for up to 40 days, when they were removed from the soil and treated with paraquat to evaluate latent infections. After that, many picnidia with abundant sporulation of alpha-conidia were observed on the stems of the plants, except on C. juncea, which was not infected by Ppm, and black velvetbean, on which only a few picnidia were observed on some of the plants tested. The pathogen was isolated from the infected stems and inoculated in healthy soybean plants, which became infected, confirming the pathogenicity of the isolates. |
