Abstract:The soybean cross ‘York’ ? ‘Lee 68’ was studied for inheritance of reactions to peanut mottle virus (PMV) and soybean mosaic virus (SMV), and for inheritance of pubescence color. ‘York’ is resistant to PMV and SMV and has gray pubescence. ‘Lee 68’ is susceptible to both viruses and has tawny pubescence. Since F2 plants can be used to de ternilne reaction to only one virus, seed from individual F2 plants were partitioned for planting in two nurseries; plants In each nursery were inoculated with a different virus. Data from the two nurseries were used to establish the genotype and phenotype of each F plant for reaction to each virus and for pubescence color. Pubescence color and reactions to PMV and SMV were inherited monogenically with tawny pubescence and resistance to PMV and SMV being dominant. Reactions to PMV and SMV were inherited independently from pubescence color. Reactions to these viruses were conditioned by linked genes with 3.7 ± 0.8 percent recombination.
