Title:Relationships among three genes conferring specific resistance to rust in soybeans

Abstract:This study was conducted to further elucidate the genetic basis of resistance to Phakospora pachyrhizi among three PI lines previously reported each to have a single dominant resistance gene. F4 lines D79-9690 and D79-9697, each having resistance derived from PI230970, were crossed with PI462312 (Ankur) and PI200492, respectively. The cross PI462312 X PI200492 was also made. F2 populations and selected F3 lines were evaluated for their reactions to the fungal isolates Taiwan 72-1 and India 73-1. PI230970, D79-9690 and D79-9697 were resistant to both isolates. PI462312 was resistant and PI200492 immune to the Indian isolate, while both were susceptible to the isolate from Taiwan. It was confirmed that each PI line carried a single dominant gene and each gene was at a different locus. The genotypes assigned to the three PI lines are given.
